When asked what he wanted out of life, Joey’s response was that his ‘main objective in life is to be successful. honest, respectful, respected, vigilant, kind, helpful and happy, I hope to be able to live a life full of meaning and purpose, always pushing myself and others to achieve the unachievable.”
Having learnt to DJ as a teenager growing up in London, Joey’s early influences included Carl Tuff Enuf Brown, Grooverider, V Recordings and Roger Sancez. His first DJ experiences were playing in house parties, clubs & bars which had a profound effect.
After some serious thought, he realized how he felt about performing and became both committed and determined to carve out a career for himself somewhere within the entertainment industry.
In 1997 Joey decided to come to Malaysia for a couple of months on a ‘roots & culture holiday’, it was an exciting time and a definitive period of his life. Joey fell in love with Malaysia, particularly KL and began to feel a calling to settle in the east..
Full of energy and passion, Joey quickly made a name for himself in the local scene, playing club and outdoor events before starting a club residency at “The Clubhouse”. Continuing to forge a solid reputation, when ‘Clubhouse’ closed Joey moved into town as the Senior Resident DJ of Twelve SI.
Throughout these years, Joey matured as an artiste and personality and become increasingly recognised in KL & Singapore. But this was just the beginning, and what nobody knew was that his big break in the industry was just around the corner…
In 2004, Joey was offered a great opportunity to became a TV Presenter with Channel V International. With news reverberating in town that one of the local club djs had finally been given a chance with one of the big media boys, everyone was speculating on who, and whether a club DJ could evolve into the required role and make a success of it. True to form, Joey hit the ground running and when they finally saw him on the telly, they knew he was no flash in the pan and his status rose instantly making him KL’s most recognised DJ Channel V opened many doors and opportunities for Joey, allowing him to expand his repertoire of skills and giving him exposure to an audience of over 100 million people from the middle-east to the Phillipines.
Having established himself as a presenter, Joey started to focus his attentions on his next targeted ambition…to begin developing himself as an artiste in his own right. In true Joey G style, KL audiences would become exposed to the ‘Cosmic Spacemonkeys’ as the winner of the Heineken Thirst Studio Malaysia Champion.
2008 promises to be a challenging and rewarding year ahead, having established an entertainment/event marketing company; Soundbox Sdn Bhd with a friend in late 2007, Joey has big plans for the future and a passionate determination to promote the Malaysian scene. So with so much going on…what’s new for 2008?
Joey’s latest project is a Radio show called ‘Turn it Up!’ Co-Hosted with DJ Gabriel on Capital 88.9fm the show provides the dance belt for the station on weekdays from 10pm to 1am, and promises to become the #1 Dance Radio show in Malaysia.
